Family business sees strong sales growth, HVP - July 2010

A move into the electric water heating market has seen Hyco Manufacturing enjoy significant sales growth over the past year.
The family run business, based in Castleford, Yorkshire was first founded in 1990, but after difficult trading conditions was sold to husband and wife team Mike and Kirsty McHugh several years latter. Originally, the company was focused on selling electrical equipment such as hand dryers, but the new owners expanded into electric water heating 10 years ago and quickly saw their sales increase.

Unlike many other companies in the sector, Hyco Manufacturing saw its sales in the final three months of 2009 be 35% up on the previous year, with November 2009 experiencing the highest monthly sales since the company began.
Hyco’s water heating range now includes Speedflow and Powerflow mains pressure units, supplying hot water for washing and washing up in multiple sinks; Handyflow vented units, providing simple-to-install single sink solutions; Ultrawash instantaneous units for hand washing; and Microboil boiling water units for tea and coffee making.
The company’s space hearting range includes Scirocco convector heaters; Mirage panel heaters; Riviera oil filled radiators and Fiji fan heaters; while the Hyco Jetstream hand dryer offers ultra-fast results and low energy use.
Hyco sells to wholesalers and distributors only, and is currently expanding its business with plumbers’ merchants. In fact, Hyco recently became a preferred supplier of electric water heating to Travis Perkins. Its products will now be sold mainly through Travis Perkins subsidiary City Plumbing Supplies, which has a nationwide network of over 190 branches.
Hyco’s water heating range is particularly focused at the small-to-medium commercial user and includes Speedflow underink unvented water heaters in 10- and 15- litre sizes, the Handyflow vented over / undersink range, Microboil boiling water heaters and the new Powerflow range of unvented water heaters, which vary from 30 litres to 90 litres.

 The company is planning to expand its Speedflow series to include a five-litre unvented undersink unit in September.

Commercial director Kirsty McHugh said: “Our aim is simply to deliver more innovative products, more efficiently and at lower prices than our competitors. We update our product range regularly and carry a large stock.
“The recent results put us on course for a full financial year with sales 20% up on the previous 12 months,” she said. “Were doing this by continuing to provide top class service to the smaller, independent organisations who have been our traditional customers, while winning more business from larger groups as we develop awareness of our brand among specifiers, installers and major users.”
